Starring a very stylish, androgynous cast of weird-looking hotties – Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve and Bowie – and rolling opening creds to dark wave group, the Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” the flick is a true cult classic. Tonight, join JagerCon’s Beth Hammarlund (l’étoile magazine, A Tiny Machine) and Kate Iverson (l’étoile magazine, Secrets of the City) for a screening of The Hunger complete with 2-4-1 drink specials and plenty of goth-related chatter. Although, not a sci-fi flick per se, the movie’s slow pace and trippy visuals makes it a perfect film to screen while drinking with your nerd pals. Plus, pick up your own limited-edition movie poster prints done by local screenprinters/designs, Who Made Who. And drop by

Their lovely business and its 50th and Bryant block was destroyed Thursday, February 18th in a devastating fire. Local supporters flock down to Java Jack’s tonight for a fundraiser bash featuring live music, beer & wine and tons of goodies. Snack on tasty treats from local restaurants, enjoy sets from Tete a Tete, Lucy Michelle, Dark Dark Dark and Mayda. Plus, bid on pieces from local artists, gift certificate packages and much more at during the event’s silent auction. All proceeds benefit Chris and Gail, Blackbird Cafe owners. The talents owners and proprietors of Blackbird tragically do not qualify for unemployment or any government assistance during insurance investigations, so tonight’s benefit show is especially important.

Yes, you heard me correct – a new kidney. When local culture remixer and audio hound, Chris Strouth – founder of UltraModern Records, film producer and musician – found out he needed a kidney transplant, he went looking in one of the most modern – and unusual – of places: Twitter. Online peeps began talking about his situation and the tweets a’fluttered until finally the unpredictable happened: Strouth found a donor match in Twitter pal, Scott Pakudatis. Now newly improved with healthy kidney power, Strouth, along with Pakudatis friends, family and supporters flock together tonight to celebrate his triumphant return to the ranks of local culturedom. Sponsored by l’étoile magazine, tonight’s party features drink specials and delicious tracks from DJ Jake Rudh, Joseph Pettini, Dean Vaccaro and DJ Drone. Get your kidney on!

When his Dirty 3.0 album dropped in ‘08, A.V. Club’s Ian Power labeled Bliss as a “Renaissance man…capable of anything shy of alchemy” when the mic’s in his hand. Don’t miss Bliss in the TC tonight for a special dynamic performance before he embarks on a regional tour with Rhymesayer’s Toki Wright and Atlanta’s Haziq Ali – dubbed the Black Belt Tour 2010. Sponsored by Best Buy, Vita.mn and music pop culture bigwigs, MTV so prepare for super impressive prizes. Then after the match, stick around for a Beatles bash featuring drink specials and modern & 60’s Brit pop/rock from DJ Rudh on Brit’s Pub clubby new 3rd floor. Today from their brilliant minds to your television see fave local electro rockers, the Solid Gold boys, in a fancy music video debut for the uber delicious single “Matter of Time.” Hopefully, you’ve already set the Tivos (or VCRs even) to MTV2 and MTVU – yes, that is a real channel – to be the first to lay eyes on the tasty video action. Recently nominated as one of the Twin Cities “best new bands” for Vita.mn’s latest contest, “Are You Local?,” Dada Trash Collage rocks an experimental mix of indie rock – heavy on the percussion and tribal-esque accoutrement. The duo has worked their sound into the chambers of our hearts and even caught the attention of Arcade Fire and Animal Collective producer, Scott Colburn, who produced their new four track EP Rain War! With live sets from locals catchy electronica pop beatmakers, Ghost in the Water and IDM-ers, The New Monarchs.

Under Barsuk Records – the label home to Death Cab, Mates of State and Rilo Kiley – the band’s 2010 LP release Eyelid Movies features an adventurous mix of minimal dreampop in “When I’m Small” – reminiscent of the Sneaker Pimps – to the sample-ridden, Detroit hip-hop beats of “Futuristic Casket” and “Running from the Cops”. Girl/boy duo Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter are known to record their synth-fueled tracks in Harmony Lodge – a barn 45 minutes away from upstate Saratoga Springs – which might explain their homemade style of organic and electronic loops, stringed instruments and natural beat-driven soul. Radio K presents with guests St. Paul’s minimal-synth trio, CLAPS and tropical samplers, Junk Culture.

Godard’s Contempt @ the Trylon

Contempt never looked as pretty as it did through the beautiful brooding eyes of commercial star, Brigitte Bardot. Godard’s attempt at big-budget filmmaking came as quite a surprise to fans of his previous radical works like Breathless, and his cast choices – i.e. casting Brigitte Bardot as lead actress – confused film critics even more. Was Godard going conventional? Not a chance. What emerged from the director was a sexy New Wave depiction of the perversity of desire, martial breakdown and the subversive conflict of fidelity, all set to Piero Piccioni’s light jazz musical score with a series of color-lens shots of the gorgeous Bardot and her naked backside. Co-starring Jack Palance, Fritz Lang and Michel Piccoli, the film parallels Godard’s personal clash of artistic expression and commercial obligations. Presented by Alliance Française and the Cinema Revolution Society, the third film in the Trylon’s series celebrating the founding father of “nouvelle vague,” Jean-Luc Godard, screens in beautifully restored 35-mm on the Trylon’s 20 ft. screen – a must for any Godard lover! Might I suggest listening to Brigitte Bardot’s “Ne Me Laisse Pas l’Aimer” in preparation?

You know, the kind where folks got together to listen to the latest LP on crisp vinyl. Well, music appreciators fret no more. Each month, Jonathan Ackerman & Travis Stearns – hosts of the Kitty Cat Klub’s “High Tide” – hand pick a few hip, local musicians and Twin Cities’ music geeks to take their individualized love affairs with music and turn them into a public – and danceable – listening showcase. Tonight’s line-up includes tracks from the Moonstoners, psych/funk/garage rock from Guystorm’s Ryan Norton, and Lookbook’s Grant Cutler playing what he describes as “music your mother listened to” (which I can only hope includes a little Bread and Grand Funk Railroad). Plus, a sizzlin’ eclectic set from Ackerman and forgotten hits Stearns revived and borrowed from YouTube.

Oh noes it's Valentine's Day! We consult a culture guru for a budget-friendly day and night itinerary that still has charm.

Finding interesting joints for your partner on Saint Valentine’s Day in Minneapolis and Saint Paul hasn’t been easy with the economy taking out our favorite hot spots. Twin Citians naturally take to creative ventures across town than splurge on one joint. For some ideas we consulted Radar, a “virtual concierge service” owned by Jen Knoch. She’s the scene queen, letting people choose among a one-time trip, weekend gig, or annual service. Don’t fear your budget will break, Jen acts like your concierge finding what you like on your budget. So here is a taste of what Radar is recommending for Valentines Day.

With Valentine’s Day on a Sunday, how ’bout a day-time date? Here’s a couple recommendations from Radar in both cities…

Saint Paul

Historical, kitchy & casual on a budget:

- Catch the 11 am tour of the Wabasha Street Caves for $6 - Come hear and see the 150 year history of these sandstone caves. You will explore the original mined caves and see the finished caves (once a romantic night club called The Castle Royal). Hear the legends of the mobster massacres and ghostly lore in the most unique setting from Chicago to San Francisco. 45-minute walking tour – reservations not required.

- Then head to the historic lunch spot on University for some drive-in food at Porky’s, which was part of the great, American car culture in the 1950s. Radar recommends the onion rings, “The most beloved component of Porky’s. Made from our secret batter, our onion rings have been the rave for over 50 years, and have also been known to be shipped all over the country to craving Twin Citians transplanted in other cities.” Also, get yourselves matching “Porkys” tee to remember the date by, go on, do it!

And for late afternoon, dinner options, also from the fine city of St Paul, which does deliver more historical options than Mpls.

Historical, kitchy & casual, still reasonable:

- Arrive into St Paul late afternoon and stop into Candyland and get sweetness goin and pick up a tin filled with your favorite candy and walk along the streets of the historic city – hit Rice Park, Mears Park, the lobby of the landmark St Paul Hotel. If it’s cold, take your tin and sit and sip hot chocolate at Mickey’s Diner.

- Mancini’s Char House – Surround you and your date with red vinyl and supper-club steak at it’s finest in this a family-run business since 1968. No ala cart steak dinners here, your plate comes complete with a salad, potato choice delivered by a legendary server. Dinner also comes with their classic buttered garlic toast and relish. Quite the stylish value! Your grandma would be proud!

Just a bit more dialed up in St Paul:

- Hit some smooth jazz at The Artists Quarters, “Music By Lovers” 7 pm show -

- Then dinner around 9:00 at the 128 Café – A St Paul sweet spot, cozy, intimate, candlelit atmosphere in an old apartment building across from the beautiful St Thomas University campus.

Minneapolis

Then in Mpls, Radar recommends for a day-time date that’s hip & casual on a budget:

- Victor’s 1959 Cafe – Memorabilia-filled Cuban café features signature black beans, mango pancakes, ropa vieja in this colorful, shack-like space.

- Walk across the street and pick out some candy for your sweetie from neighborhood newcomer, Sugar Sugar. Candy from the classics to artsy international options.

Mpls date-night, Radar recommends:

- Dinner at Grand Cafe – Housed in a quiet Mpls neighborhood, this is charming spot that offers an ideal romantic night. Food is consistently fantastic.

- Then “All You Need is Love” at the Jungle Theater – Connie Evingson and special guest Adam Levy of the Honeydogs explore the music of The Beatles.

As guru of local dining, culture, entertainment, and shopping, Jen will be offering the Twin City Scene followers a promotion on a 6 month Membership, that, along with the concierge service, will give you some sweet insider discounts and deals. Nothing like finally being able to have that swank restaurant on days other than Valentine’s. Look for the offer here on TCS soon.

Bless their little overly ambitious hearts. When it came to visions of the future predictions were eager, to say the least. Why, Back to the Future II alone had the year 2015 self-drying its jackets, hover-boarding across lakes and driving to work via entire highway systems in the sky. Disney’s “Tomorrow Land” park foresights along with science fiction mediums “high hopes” for the future ranged from the hilarious to downright frightening, and still have some of us worried that our memories have been secretly “Rekalled,” or that one day we will be murdered by our smart kitchen. Tonight, join Minnesota History Center’s “History of Hip” historian Brian Horrigan and blogger Matt Novak (Paleo Future) as they peer into yesteryear’s zany futuristic predictions, highlighting some of their favorite trends of culture and sci-fi past while making a few personal predictions of their own. Grab a drink from the Clown Lounge bar and settle in for some futuristic convos.

That’s 103 Tuesdays of mayhem and dancing. Tonight, get down to the Triple Rock and show your appreciation as resident DJs Wezz and Mike 2600 celebrate the two year anni of Triple Double. Here to fix that nasty dilemma is hosts I am Break, He is the Beat – party magistrates of The Original Truth Squad. Much like the field trips you took in grade school, I can guarantee this event will be the highlight of your week. Their second art soirée/coterie outing (i.e. l’étoile Field Trip #2), promises to be another delicious double-header evening with stops at the Weisman Art Museum and the 501 Club. The night kicks off at the Weisman for an intimate exploration of the latest exhibit “Common Sense: Art and the Quotidian” which features sculpture, art, video installation, paintings and more from artists Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys and a few locals. Then, grab a buddy and head over to the 501 for the l’étoile co-sponsored event “Vigilante Justice” to peep local art from Garrett Perry, Jesse Draxler, John Alspach – to name just a few – and groove to live sets from Phantom Tails, Dada Trash Collage and Hunting Club. Plus, enter the evening’s raffle to win grab bags with tons of great swag from ROBOTlove, Society6.com, art zine, The Throw Up and more. Knowing l’étoile and their penchant for mixing business with pleasure, expect hobnobbing with interesting local peeps, lavish shenanigans, not to mention surprises – and cocktails – around every art cached corner. Meet at the front door of the Weisman from 7 to 7:15, grab a name tag and get ready!

So what makes this one my fave? It’s for a good cause and you can dance to it, of course! City Pages, Gimme Noise and First Ave have joined generous forces with 89.3 The Current and Radio K to present tonight’s smashing concert featuring Mark Mallman, Solid Gold, Zoo Animal, and Peter Wolf Crier with DJ sets from Jimmy2Times and Mike 2600 in between the bands. Hosted by City Page’s Andrea Swensson and Jen Boyles, the event is part rock show, part art marketplace where you can shop inexpensive local art from artists CHUCK U, Anthem Heart, BRLSQ and more! All proceeds will be split between the Red Cross Haiti Relief & Development Fund and Architecture for Humanity – two fantastic organizations who have been rallying relief funds, time and energy to help the people of Haiti cope with the aftermath of a devastating disaster. So head down, rock out and make a difference!

If you’re a local dubstepper, chances are you’re familiar with Guillermo Scott Herren (aka the sample master behind Prefuse 73). Known as the godfather of experimental hip-hop production, Prefuse’s distorted snares, kicks and murky texturing aren’t typically the sounds you’d associate with “refined” music. And yet his latest album emerges with matured editing magic and digital complexities, making it his most subtle record to date. Don’t miss Prefuse 73 take it back to the roots, old-school style with guests Gaslamp Killer and Voices Voices.

“Once upon a time a beautiful ballerina became lost in the forest and was swallowed by darkness…” No, it’s not the premise of the new Bat for Lashes video or even Britney Spears’ new perfume – it’s the theme of Cliche’s anticipated annual fashion show, Avoid the Grey 2010. And as our city lies in a season that makes it appear more like a grey tundra every day, it’s comforting to know that local fashion plates and clothing designers are welcoming in the warmth and driving out the dreary with their preview of ultra chic and über unique Spring trends. Featuring designers Niki English, kjurek couture, Amanda Christine, Peloria, syd, Carmichael Claith, Kathryn V, Dawson, Kelson, Ivan Idland, Jenny Carle, Tender Cuts, Red Shoe Clothing Co., Ashley Busch, Arwyn Birch, and Rachel DeLange (j-fi). If the fact that the crowd wooing collaborative street wear from SCENEaSOTA creator, Maritza Ramirez and screen-printers, Anthem Heart is still on the minds (and bodies) of local style gurus minds is any indicator, this show is likely to be haute, haute, haute and full of inspiration! Just what we need to beat old man winter.

FYI: Tickets to Avoid the Grey are unfortunately sold out, so unless you can smuggle your way into your fashionista friend’s handbag, you’re SOL.
To say 50’s teeny parody, Cry-Baby, is “over-the-top” is an understatement; saying it’s a cult classic, indisputable. Nevertheless, the film seems to sneak pass the radar of many cult fans and die-hard camp lovers. Wrapping up the last film in a series of movies devoted to the multi-faceted and often zany career of Johnny Depp – “In Deppth” – the Trylon screens one of my personal faves, John Water’s Cry-Baby. Featuring an ensemble of outrageous performances from legend rocker, Iggy Pop, talk show gossip mama, Ricki Lake, Traci Lords and Patty Hearst, the film centers around “Cry-Baby” Wade Walker (Johnny Depp) the leader of the rowdy juvie bunch known as the “Drapes” and his forbidden love/lust with conservative townie “Square,” Allison. And any proper Cry-Baby rebel fan would dress the part….just saying.

Kill to Kill + Grant Cutler & the Gorgeous Lords @ 7th St. Entry

Although experimental indie rockers, Kill to Kill are set to headline, the reason this event lands itself on the list is mainly due to its sub-headers – Grant Cutler & the Gorgeous Lords. There’s something charismatic about local talent and Lookbook beat-copilot, Grant Cutler, that draws such a loyal fanbase to his creations. Could it be he has the Midas touch? Whatever his special powers be, Cutler steps to the forefront with this solo project (featuring members of Askeleton, Brutal Becomings and The Plastic Constellations) and the result is a timeless sound very un-Lookbook-esque. His baritone vocals juxtaposed with minimal guitar jump one decade back from Lookbook’s 80’s-ridden sounds to channel the famous blue raincoat world of Leonard Cohen and the land of 70’s pop ballads. Definitely worth a re-visit. With Blue Sky Blackout and Is/Is.

The University of Minnesota’s annual Senior Fashion Show is fast approaching. The show, InSight 2010, will take place February 6th, and is aiming to give the audience insight into the wide range of designers in the U of M’s senior class.

Leading off the show is designer, Carey Magnus. Magnus has grown into a designer who has acquired a specific direction, one that seems to work. She dreams up designs for primarily young women which merge trend, classic style, complimentary color palettes, and a distinguished attention to detail. Her recent semester spent in Italy has also allowed Magnus to add international flavor, and make it her own.

Recently, I sat down with Magnus and got a close look at what inspired her senior line and the anticipated future.

What is the aesthetic of your line?

When I look at it – a fresh clean wardrobe that takes classic elements and reworks them in an unexpected way. I think its realistic to say that these are all pieces you would want in your wardrobe, because they can be dressed up , dressed down, and in this economy that is beneficial. You could wear a piece to a social event or throw on the jacket on the way to work. Versatility – could be tailored for the work person, but could also be reworked to go out to social events.

How did you go about choosing models?

I wanted real people. Two of them model professionally, they are all students, it seemed realistic to have college age students. Girls with a natural beauty; their hair looks natural and are just naturally beautiful. I also liked the idea of people who had a natural wave to their hair.

From sketching to the final stitch, what point grew most stressful?

Fitting. Pattern making and coming up with designs is always hard to make a decision … but when it comes to putting the ideas into the garments and fitting them to a real body, you realize there are problems within the design… because you want it to fit correctly. Your vision could be completely skewed. The amount of work put into a 3.5 minute show puts an incredible amount of nerve on the designer. The show is called InSight because we only have 4 minutes to show our whole semester’s project, but people don’t realize what goes into it. We want to give insight into what we do in studio, what our sketches look like, etc.

Get an inside look here: http://mediamill.cla.umn.edu/mediamill/display/58221

Any aspirations for where this line could take you? Do you see it as your initial launch as a designer?

I think it is definitely a good representation of my style. After all my internships, my style has developed into this. In this economy, you need apparel that can be worn, not simply modeled. I believe these will work as vital pieces for my portfolio as truly wearable garments.

A preview into InSight 2010?

There are 14 designers… couture dresses , career wear, costume design, and evening dresses. Some very realistic – ready to wear pieces to avant garde. It’s thrilling between to see our design aesthetics develop within our “family” of designers. I am so excited to see all of our hard work and strengths fuse together in one final show.

Now, get your InSight, February 6th!
